STD Panel Testing
Getting tested for STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) is an important step in protecting the health of sexually active patients. The term “sexually transmitted disease” (STD) has replaced the term “venereal disease”. STDs are generally acquired by sexual contact. Some infections are also transmitted non-sexually such as diaplacentally during pregnancy or from mother to infant during childbirth, through blood transfusions or through shared needles. Sexually transmitted infections have a range of signs and symptoms and may go unnoticed until complications occur or a sexual partner is diagnosed.
Signs/symptoms that may indicate an STD include
Sores on the genitals, in oral or rectal areas, painful or burning sensation when urinating, discharge from genitals, unusual vaginal bleeding, swollen inguinal lymph nodes, lower abdominal pain. Symptoms may appear several days to years after exposure depending on the organism. They may resolve within a few weeks, even without treatment, but progression with later complications or recurrence is also possible.
Complications
Recurrent genital sores, pain during intercourse, scrotal pain, redness and swelling, pelvic pain, eye inflammation, arthritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility.
Benefits
Several pathogens can be detected in one test.

FAQs
- An STD panel test is a group of laboratory tests that check for multiple sexually transmitted infections at the same time. It uses blood or urine samples to detect common bacterial and viral STDs early, even when no symptoms are present, allowing timely treatment.
- An STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) panel includes blood tests, PCR tests, and microbiology tests to screen for infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B & C, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes (HSV I & II), Trichomonas, Mycoplasma, and Ureaplasma.
- Some STDs, especially bacterial infections, can be cured with proper treatment. Viral STDs may not be curable but can be effectively managed with medical care. Early testing and treatment help prevent complications and transmission.
- The STD Panel at FML Dubai uses a combination of blood tests, PCR (molecular testing), and microbiology culture methods to accurately detect sexually transmitted infections.
- Turnaround time typically is 1–3 days for immunoassay and microbiology tests, and 2–4 days for PCR panels.
- Symptoms that may indicate an STD include genital sores or ulcers, unusual discharge, burning during urination, lower abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, and swollen groin lymph nodes. Some STDs may cause no symptoms, so testing is recommended after possible exposure.
- Yes, couples can get tested together. STD panel testing and Premarital screening is recommended for couples to ensure sexual health, provide peace of mind, and support early detection and treatment if required.
- Yes, all STD testing and results at FML Dubai are handled confidentially according to lab standards and privacy policies.
